last appearance (1910), it made a rather poor displayand was a disappointment to the public and astrono-mers alike (Plates XLI. and XLII.). It may here benoted that in comet-pictures the stars usually appearas bright streaks and not as points, for the reason thatthe photographic telescope is adjusted to keep pacewith the comet rather than with the stars. The great comet of 1811, to which the wonderfulvintage of that year was ascribed, was a magnificentobject, and was visible for nearly a year and a half.Its nucleus was four hundred and twenty-eight milesin diameter, and of a ruddy hue, and was enclosed withina nebulous globe one hundred and twenty-seven thou-sand miles across. The length of the tail was onehundred and thirty million miles, and its breadth nearlyfifteen million miles. The splendid comet of 1843 was one of the mostbrilliant of modern times, and also marked a richvintage year. It came so close to the sun that the twosurfaces were only thirty-two thousand miles apart.The length of its tail was about two hundred millionmiles. The finest comet of the nineteenth century was thecomet of 1858, called Donatis comet. It was remark-able for the intense brilliancy of its nucleus, and themagnitude and artistic conformation of its tail. Itreached perihelion the latter part of September, andwas visible to the naked eye for over three months.Donatis comet and DeCheseauxs of 1744, are consid-ered the most beautiful comets on record.
