An engage-ment at Cologne soon followed, and the nextseason he joined the forces of the MetropolitanOpera-House under Casazza. Andreas de Segurola was born in Barcelona.His father died when he was but three yearsof age and his mother when he was six, so hewas brought up by his two uncles, one a canonin the church, the other a diplomat, and bythem he was intended for the diplomaticservice. De Segurola accordingly studied law in Bar-celona, but in the hotel at which he was stayingthere was a famous singer, Hariclee Darclee,then at the height of her career, and a memberof the Liceo Theatre. He sang for her, and shegave him much encouragement, even askinghim to sing at her benefit concert with her.After this performance the manager of thetheatre asked him to join the company, whichhe did at a salary of fifteen hundred francs amonth. His debut was successful and the fol-lowing summer he went to South America un-der Cleofonte Campanini. He sang three sea-sons at Madrid and Lisbon, and filled engage-ments in Eome, Palermo, Naples, Parma, andin Argentine, and was for two years a memberof the San Carlo Company under Henry Bus-sell.
