A revolution is a big change. The word revolution comes from Latin and means “rotation”. People started using the word towards the end of the Middle Ages. Back then the word was used in Astronomy and meant the rotation of the planets around the sun.
Later the word revolution was used for a change in politics when a new leader or an entirely new group came to power. Rules were added and changed. Sometimes people also had different views about how a country should be ruled.
The word revolution is also used outside of politics. In the 20th century when more and more factories started appearing all over Europe. This was the Industrial Revolution. Today the word Revolution is also used in advertisements. For example, if there is a new product, they could say it’s “revolutionary”.
